Menu (Navigation Bar)

A navigation menu is a list of a links pointing to important areas of a website. They are usually presented as a horizontal bar of links at the top of every page on a website.

Navigation menus give your site structure and help site visitors find what they’re looking for. This guide to the Menu system covers the basic tasks an admin may carry out when using the built-in menu editor.

Adding Items To Your Navigation Bar

Links to specific event categories, pages, websites, and directories can be added to your navigation bar. To add these items to your menu, you need to log into the admin and go to Appearance > Menus. The different link types are split between panes left of the menu listing but the ones you will most commonly use are Event Categories, Pages, and Custom Links.

Adding Event Categories

  1. Locate the pane entitled Event Categories.
  2. Within this pane, select the View All link to bring up a list of all the currently published categories on your site.
  3. Select the category that you want to add by clicking the checkbox next to each category’s title.
  4. Click the Add to Menu button located at the bottom of this pane to add your selection(s) to the menu. This new category will be placed at the bottom of the list. To make the new menu item a subordinate of another, you need to position the ‘child’ underneath its ‘parent’ and then drag it slightly to the right. To do that:
    • Position the mouse over the ‘child’ menu item.
    • Whilst holding the left mouse button, drag it up so it is below the ‘parent’ menu item and then drag it slightly to the right.
    • Release the mouse button.
    • Repeat these steps for each sub-menu item.
  5. Click the Save Menu button once you’ve added all the menu items you want. Your custom menu has now been saved.

To see your changes, refresh the front end of your web site.

If you do not see the Events Categories tab on the left sidebar, it may be hidden. To unhide the tab, simply click on the Screen Options button on the top right corner of the page. This will show a menu with checkboxes next to option names.

As you can see most of the options will already be checked. For the others, you can display them by clicking on the checkbox next to an option name, and it will appear on left sidebar.

Adding Pages

  1. Locate the pane entitled Pages.
  2. Within this pane, select the View All link to bring up a list of all the currently published Pages on your site.
  3. Select the page that you want to add by clicking the checkbox next to each category’s title.
  4. Click the Add to Menu button located at the bottom of this pane to add your selection(s) to the menu. This new page will be placed at the bottom of the list. To make the new menu item a subordinate of another, you need to position the ‘child’ underneath its ‘parent’ and then drag it slightly to the right as explained above in Adding Categories.
  5. Click the Save Menu button once you’ve added all the menu items you want. Your custom menu has now been saved.
